چکیده

A symbol is a pattern (of physical marks, electromagnetic energy, etc.) which denotes, designates, or otherwise has meaning. The notion that intelligence requires the use and manipulation of symbols, and that humans are therefore symbol systems, has been extremely in uential in arti cial intelligence. keywords: symbol, reasoning, intelligence, representation, logic This article has two parts. We begin with a presentation and discussion of the idea of a physical symbol system (PSS), as formulated by Newell and Simon. This notion, and the associated physical symbol system hypothesis (PSSH), were rst presented|under somewhat di erent names|in (Newell and Simon 1972), with later fuller formulations (Newell and Simon 1976, Newell 1980) and still later elaborations (Newell 1990). The second part consists of a discussion of various objections to PSS/PSSH and replies, especially with reference to the themes of symbol grounding, situated cognition, embodiment, and situated robotics.

A symbol-based fuzzy decision-making approach to evaluate the user satisfaction on services in academic digital libraries

Academic libraries play a significant role in providing core services that include research, teaching and learning. Usersatisfaction is an important indicator for evaluating the performance of library service. This paper develops a methodfor measuring the user satisfaction in a group decision-making environment. First, the performance of service isevaluated by using questionnaire survey. The sc...

آیا مواجهه دیداری با نماد بدنمند بهبودی، سبب تسکین درد می‌شود؟

The current pain management interventions are emphasizing on conscious regulation of pain-related behaviors and emotions. In contrast, novel interventions like priming-based ones suggest that behavior- and emotion-regulation happens without conscious selection. Based on the perceptual symbol systems theory, this study investigated the impact of non-conscious exposure to a visual symbol of heali...

On the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems

Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...

Symbol Grounding Problem

INTRODUCTION The topic of representation acquisition, manipulation and use has been a major trend in Artificial Intelligence since its beginning and persists as an important matter in current research. Particularly, due to initial focus on development of symbolic systems, this topic is usually related to research in symbol grounding by artificial intelligent systems. Symbolic systems, as propos...

Flex Your Symbol: A Case for Adapting Symbol Duration in Communication Systems

In wireless networks, different links often have different signal power to noise power ratios (SNRs). SNR affects the reliability and throughput of a link. Current wireless systems adapt transmission power, modulation or coding to improve reliability and throughput, based on link SNR. However, all these systems transmit a modulated symbol for a fixed duration across all links. Theory and system...
